Hi everyone. Sorry for the silence. Its been a busy time, wrestling with lockdown and all the rest. However I am very pleased to announce the launch of a new not-for-profit called Somerset Wildlands dedicated to raising money to buy land for nature, starting in the Somerset Levels.
You can check out the new holding website or donate here http://www.somersetwildlands.org
Our wildlife is in crisis. We know that business as usual cannot continue, both for biodiversity and the climate crisis. Somerset Wildlands is a vision, or perhaps a dream, to return wildlife and nature to the Somerset Levels. It’s a great place, don’t get me wrong, but it is a shadow of what it once was. This was once England’s Danube Delta, its Okavango, and perhaps it could regain a little of that glory once again.
Our initial plans are modest – to raise funds to buy small plots of ordinary farm land as they become available. This will inject a bit of diversity and chaos into the landscape, breaking up the the boundaries between the heavily managed (but successful) nature reserves and the dairy and maize fields beyond.
in the meantime I will continue to do what I can on my own land, and perhaps even buy some more if money allows, but that can only go so far. To do more, we are going to need to do it together. Thanks!
That’s a great initiative. Well done 🙂
